rozk wrote an article comparing religion and fandom, which made me finally get my ass in gear and finish the meta post I started in May, concerning the similarities in how religious groups and fannish groups are structured. For those of you who don't remember May, that's when I came home from Istanbul, where Dad had been holding lectures on Islam (as a secular subject, not preaching) in addition to all the other fun things that happened in Istanbul. (And not so fun things, like my knee.) Anyway. One of the first lectures was largely about sociology of religion, and it had me sit up straight and go, "This so works for fandom too!" The post was supposed to be made the week after I came home, but somehow, I didn't get around to finishing it until rozk's post reminded me. Better late than ever. I use only a few examples in every category - I'm sure you can think of many more. Anyway. Dad talked about the different ways a religious community build a common heritage – and he pointed out the way this can be applied to othe groups too, such as the ”religion” of engineers (he comes from an engineering family). He speaks of the final heritage as a fruit basket, where everyone picks what they like, things seep out in the cracks, and other things are added over time. The five basic compartments in this fruit basket are: myth, ritual, categorization, terminology, and norm. ( Each of the five explained, with examples from fandom. )To finish this meta post, when Dad has spoken of the fruit basket, he often says, ”There are as many religions as there are people. Possibly a few more religions than people.” So, I say: There are as many fandoms as there are people, and we all pick and choose to form our own experience. Now, go pick something. Enjoy. :-) Tags: fandom, meta, religion

Some of you may be happy to hear that Chapter 13 ("Charlie") of Dulce et decorum est is now complete in draft. :-) No, I don't know when it'll be ready to post, but I'm back in the saddle! I also updated the table-of-contents page with the tentative titles of the next four chapter, which -- I think -- will bring us to the end of book 6 ( Half-blood Prince). Sometimes it's hard to tell, but it shouldn't be more than 5 chapters, certainly. Oh, yeah, I also changed out a picture in "Theories" since we now have images of Mr. Pattinson in a proper tux. ;> (And man, HOW all that has changed since last year when I struggled to find new images of Rob for my story! Now all of a sudden the whole world loves the boy and I don't even bother to keep up with all the pictures. It's actually just a tad annoying. I find myself wanting to shout, 'But I saw him first!' LOL! Not that I necessarily did; I do realize he had some fans from way back, but still. I feel like I need to iterate that I thought he was handsome before he was either Edward Cullen OR tabloid fodder. *grin*) Tags: dulce et decorum est

morthel asked me to post this as a warning to everyone, and so I will. Now, the Swedish vampire film Let the Right One In is pretty much brilliant, and you all should see it, preferably before the Yanks make their own version where they change the names of Oskar and Eli to Owen and Abby. (Yes, they're really going to do that.) However. The Fright website has a comparison between the theatrical and DVD subtitles, and if their account is accurate, then the DVD subtitles are... very weird indeed. Therefore, if you plan on seeing this film, do wait until you can get your hands on the new and improved DVD they're sending out (because of the bad feedback) with the theatrical subtitles. This is a public service message brought to you by patriotism. :-) Tags: film talk, let the right one in

New recipe I must share -- vegan and non-vegan version. FAST and tasty.
2 c. cous-cous 2 c. chicken broth (or water, for vegan) 1/2 c. finely chopped zuccini 1/2 c. finely chopped red or yellow pepper 1/2 c. peas OR corn 1 c. finely chopped sweet onion 1 tbsp. garlic 1 tsp. dill 1 tsp. tarragon 1/2 tsp each salt & pepper olive oil as needed c. 1 cup chopped chicken (remove for vegan)
--------------
Chop the chicken till you have about 1 c. *cooked* (so about a cup and a half raw or c. .75 lb). Cook in olive oil, drain and set aside. (Omit for vegan version)
Saute the garlic in more olive oil, add onions, tarragon and dill + salt/pepper, then add the rest of the veggies. Saute while you get the cous-cous ready.
Bring 2 c. chicken broth (or 2 c. water for vegan version) to a boil. Stir in the cous-cous. Set aside for a few minutes. Fluff so it doesn't stick and add about 1-2 tbsp olive oil (also to prevent sticking).
I use the low-salt version of the chicken broth, btw.
When the veggies are ready, stir in the cooked chicken (or, again, omit for vegan). Make sure the chicken is heated through, then add the whole thing to the cous-cous mix and stir well.
Wholah! Dinner!

After weeks of not seeing her, April came by our door last night. We fed and petted her, and then went back inside. But I kept seeing her drop by the back deck all night -- or maybe she never left. Tonight she came by again and meowed at us, so we went out and fed her again. As I was petting her, I noticed an ugly and large wound on her nether regions, just below her genitals. It was hard to get a good look at it since she's so squirmy, but it does not look good. It didn't seem to actually be an open wound, but it's still red and she shouldn't be spending hours outdoors when she's got such a nasty wound (and I wonder how the hell she got it). The one tag on her is from a nearby vet's office (not ours), so I'm going to call them in the morning and see what they think. Frankly, we can't afford more vet bills at this point, but I'm not going to risk her dying from an infection. And I'd like to kick whoever is theoretically looking after her, because they're doing a shitty job. She's clearly hungry and has a huge wound that could easily get infected -- it might already be infected. And in other news, I'm retiring from writing fanfic. The fics that are completed or near completion will not be posted. Tags: cats
